Surprisingly, news of the PlayStation Portable Slim hasn't done much to kill demand for the existing hardware, with only a 16,000-unit drop-off from last month. Also keeping Sony strong were sales of the PlayStation 2 (222,000 units) and the PlayStation Portable (214,000 units). It may not have been enough to pass the 360, but the jump from June's numbers is surely welcomed by Sony.

Sony sold 159,000 PS3s in July, a whopping 61 percent increase over June's 98,500 (and it's even more impressive when you consider that June had a full week's worth of sales data by NPD collection methods). The only other Xbox 360 game to make the top ten list, however, was Guitar Hero 2 at number 10. Microsoft was able to snag the number one spot in software though, proving that Sony may no longer be the king of the hill when it comes to sports games: the Xbox 360 version of NCAA Football 2008 was at the top of the charts last month. Microsoft moved 170,000 Xbox 360s in July, which is a small decrease from the 198,400 units sold the previous month. Nintendo doesn't have anyone to worry about-no one came close to its sales numbers. Nintendo also claimed three spots on the top 10 list for software sales, with Wii Play at number three, Mario Party 8 at number five, and Pokemon Diamond Version at number seven. Even with the supply constraints, the little system with the big waggle came out on top. Pretty amazing stuff, considering many people are still having a hard time finding Wii hardware on store shelves. In July, the Wii and DS showed no signs of slowing down: they sold 425,000 and 405,000 units respectively. The PS3 has yet to pass Microsoft's system in terms of sales. Now that the NPD Group has released the US numbers for July, we have our answer: the PlayStation 3 hardware did get a 61 percent month-over-month jump, but that wasn't enough to overtake the 360. The question we were left with after the $100 price cut on the 60GB PlayStation 3 SKU was how energized consumers would become about Sony's next-gen console. Sony got by on the strength of its PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable hardware while the PlayStation 3 stumbled behind the rest of the pack. Nintendo dominated, and the 360 slogged along. Last month we were able to take a good hard look at the first half of the year in terms of US console sales, and there were no surprises.
